There were times during college days when i hated coding. Being an electronics
student i aspired to become an electronics engineer. I hated the few computer
subjects which were part of the curriculum and never got output in the computer
labs. But did i know the basics of electronics?? Not really....So after the 4
years of college life i landed into the big void not knowing what to do
next...Electronics field was an area which had very less opportunities and which
only employed graduates who really are "electronics engineers". So that door was
not anyway going to open for me.. So i decided to study a computer language
which i heard is most apt for people like me... COBOL
The mainframe course of 3 months went similar to my college years. My
brain was not ready for the BASICS yet again. I saw my classmates landing on
different jobs with various MNC's. Now i found another hurdle in front of me
ENGLISH. Both hurdles kept pulling me off from the finish lines..
Finally i landed on a small job in North Kerala as a technician for a
wireless internet service provider. Configuring radios to send and receive
wireless transmissions was my job. Soon i was enjoying my job and was hoping to
build a career in that field. But due to some bad office politics i had to leave
my job within a month of joining.
Again i was back to square one searching for a job and with some effort
landed on a small company in technopark which was doing projects on mainframe
migration. After few months of sitting idle/doing sample projects in mainframe i
was asked to train people on mainframes. I didn't even have actual work
experience and i tried my best to learn and train people on mainframes.. I
didn't know how much my pupils learned :) but my brain was starting to open its
long closed doors to the BASICS of coding...
The company i joined asked me to work for another local-software-giant
which was looking for people trained in mainframes. Finally i was able to do some
actual development work for a client. This is when i came to know a pre-requisite
for any developer...The Google God...Slowly i started learning stuff and
started realizing that Coding was not that hard a job to do if you enjoy what
you do...Meantime i was made permanent in the company but ENGLISH was still
another roadblock for me. I started reading novels(from Harry Potter to The
Fountain head) in my free time which helped me improve my language skills and
also has inspired me.
I completed a decade now in coding and i am working for a reputed MNC now. I learned a few things which helped me survive these years:
- Give your fullest in what you do.
- Try to enjoy even the worthless task you are assigned with.
- Live your life and don't bother about work on off-hours.
- Read books which will surely inspire you and will better your language skills.
- And finally always find time to help your team members who is in need.
